Strip search policies in women’s prisons will be updated following a review of the traumatising practice, which is said to be even worse in watch houses.
Strip searches that are failing to make women’s prisons safer in Queensland are often re-traumatising and “counterproductive to everything else” the justice system seeks to do, staff have told a major review.
and published on Wednesday, the review of strip-search use in the state’s women’s prisons found the inconsistent and ineffective practice was also leading women to forgo family visits to avoid them.“The demeaning and dehumanising nature of strip searches undermines the dignity and self-esteem of prisoners and their opportunity for rehabilitation,” Queensland Human Rights Commissioner Scott McDougall wrote.
A trans woman who was sexually assaulted in a men’s prison was also then subjected to a search by multiple male staff.“My family used to come weekly. I just said to him, ‘You know, we’ll just make it monthly or every six weeks’ ... just to cut down that strip search,” one prisoner told the review.
