The Samuel D. Hunter play is set in a soon-to-close Idaho nursing home during a blizzard
Over the past decade, San Diego theaters have returned again and again to the plays of Samuel D. Hunter.
OnStage has returned to Hunter’s canon this month with “Rest,” which made its world premiere at Irvine’s South Coast Repertory in 2014. It’s set in a soon-to-close Northern Idaho nursing home where the last three residents and last four employees get snowed in together and are forced to confront their hopes, fears and mortality. James P. Darvas, executive artistic director of OnStage, is stage director for “Rest,” just as he was for “A Bright New Boise.
Anna Sandor is sharp as a knife’s edge as the cynical Etta, an exhausted caregiver who loathes sentimentality. Nick Young gives a spare and haunting performance as Gerald, who “sees” faceless beings in the empty spaces between the notes of his favorite composition, Arvo Pärt’s mournful piano piece “Für Alina.” And Tom Kilroy provides much-needed comic relief as Tom, a wry man who has feigned deafness to avoid conversations with the staff.
