'This was a fitting celebration of the New Century’s Hall’s revival'
Spiritualized seem like a good fit to be part of the reinvented New Century Hall’s first birthday celebrations; the revived venue, nestled on the second floor of the CIS Building, would have seemed space age when it was built in the 1960s.
That includes by Spiritualized themselves, who have zigged and zagged stylistically in the years since without ever quite reaching the cosmically high bar they set themselves with that record. That isn’t to say that Pierce’s output in the years since hasn’t been worthwhile, with last year’s Everything Was Beautiful in particular a beguiling glimpse into his gospel and classic rock influences, and the foundation of tonight’s set is built around that record and 2018’s And Nothing Hurt.
The epic soundscapes of ‘Hey Jane’ bring the curtain up; soon after, the crunching, melodic rock of ‘She Kissed Me ’ offers a playful subversion of classic pop that goes beyond just the title.
