We embark upon a new series of Preston's best and worst reviewed restaurants, starting with Fino Tapas 🇪🇸

. Online reviews mention ‘spectacular food and service’, ‘crispy, tender calamari’ and ‘divine pig’s cheeks’.We were seated immediately, given menus and offered water for the table, which is always a nice touch.

It’s been a while since I took Yvonne with me on a review, and I had a fluffy cloud of nostalgia obscuring the knowledge that she approaches tapas like she’s staking a claim for land in the Wild West. The generous portion of calamari with aioli and a chunk of lemon was crispy, perfectly cooked, and went well with an equally generous plate of goat’s cheese, beetroot and walnut salad.Unfortunately, when we came to order, we were told that the salt fish fritters we’d chosen weren’t available, so we panicked and went for butternut squash and goat’s cheese croquettes, doubling up on the goat’s cheese.

We chose huevos rotos for our fifth item, at a £1.11 supplement – crispy fried potato, spring onion, plenty of chorizo, roasted padron peppers, topped with an egg fried sunny side up – which would have been enough of a meal on its own with some crusty bread. For our sixth plate we ordered a selection of artisan bread with olive oil and sherry vinegar. We were disappointed as the bread was thinly sliced and toasted which made it dry, so we left most of it as there was so much other food.
