Revised protocol being developed for children who go missing from state care

As previously reported by the Irish Mirror, 34 children were missing from state care in June.

Tusla and Gardaí are currently developing a new protocol for when children go missing from State care, Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman has confirmed.It is understood that 23 of the missing children came to Ireland seeking international protection and became separated from their families along the way.

“Following the very significant increase in Ukrainian and international protection applicants we've seen since 2022, we’ve also seen a very significant increase in the number of separated children,” he said. “Where a child goes missing from Tusla accommodation, there is a clear protocol that applies with An Garda Síochána, there is a joint operational protocol.
