Best-selling author and life coach Gerry Hussey shares his insights on harnessing neuroplasticity, managing emotions, and cultivating a positive mindset.

Gerry Hussey, co-founder of Soul Space and a best-selling author, is a familiar figure to anyone on a self-improvement journey. The Galway native empowers individuals to reawaken their passion and energy, guiding them to become their best selves. RSVP had the opportunity to speak with the father-of-two about the common struggles we face in life, the techniques to overcome them, and how he personally navigates his low days while utilizing tools to get back on track.

The conversation delved into the fascinating world of neuroplasticity – the proven ability of our brain to change and build new neurological pathways until the very end. Hussey explained that our brain doesn't distinguish between thoughts and actions, constantly listening to our words and shaping itself accordingly. This ability highlights the power of positive self-talk and the importance of consciously crafting the narrative we tell ourselves. He emphasized the role of our reticular activating system, which amplifies what we focus on. When we repeatedly engage with something on social media or in our thoughts, our brain prioritizes it, presenting us with more of it. This can create echo chambers, both online and in our minds. Visualization, according to Hussey, is a powerful tool to combat this. He recommends spending time visualizing the day you desire, focusing on success and positive experiences. This practice strengthens neural connections, priming the brain to attract those experiences. Hussey compared our thoughts to a magnifying glass, capable of either expanding our problems or magnifying solutions. He encourages us to direct our attention to what we have, what we can control, and the joy we wish to manifest. Recognizing that emotions are natural and temporary, he emphasizes the importance of acknowledging them without suppression. He likened staying in negative emotions to being a teabag, steeping in negativity, while choosing to change them is like actively transforming our state. To shift emotions, Hussey suggests understanding the root cause and then daring to alter it. He shares his own experience of overcoming a period of low energy during Christmas by returning to his yoga and sea swims, highlighting the transformative power of these conscious choices
