The Orchard County haven’t been past the quarter-final stage since 2005, but O’Neill says that McGeeney, a veteran of that side of 19 years ago, has infused them with confidence that they have what it takes to go all the way
Rian O’Neill fully believes that there’s an All-Ireland in Armagh as the Championship finally reaches the business end.
“He’s a great backroom team in around him and he instils that belief in us that we’re there and we’re as good as what’s around and we firmly believe that but, at the end of the day, we have to show up in these big games and give a good account of ourselves and hopefully that’s enough but if you’re asking if we believe, absolutely 100%, yeah.”
Having lost those two quarter-finals on penalties, as well as a pair of Ulster finals in that fashion both this year and last, O’Neill rejected the suggestion that the baggage from those defeats may be too great a load to carry now facing into big games, starting with the upcoming quarter-final. Their response since losing the Ulster final on spot kicks to Donegal last month has been impressive as they beat Westmeath and Derry in the group stage before eking out a draw with Galway to finish top.
