Declan Rice and Jack Grealish broke Irish hearts - again - in England's 2-0 defeat of the Boys in Green.
Declan Rice must have wanted to lose the run of himself in front of all those flailing arms giving the one-fingered salute.
Pushing his palms downwards and looking to the ground in front of the away end, he downplayed the brilliant strike that put England on their comfortable path to victory. But even the irate Ireland fans grew tired of booing him and, by the second-half, had more or less given up the chase. And the playmaker who played all of his underage football with Ireland - up to and including Under-21 level - didn’t have any such issues milking his own goal.
Ireland had actually started well in Heimir Hallgrimsson’s first game in charge with Jayson Molumby heading over and Sammie Szmodics forcing Jordan Pickford to save. Molumby may be the ‘bastard’ that Hallgrimsson wants in his team as he has plenty of steel and generated an early roar when he roughed up Grealish.
England were simply toying with Ireland every time they attacked in that first half and would have been out of sight were it not for Caoimhin Kelleher.
