Richardson ISD is grappling with how to keep educating students amid the omicron surge.

The record-high number of COVID-19 cases across the area and in the school district has caused a substantial increase in the number of elementary students seeking remote learning, the district wrote in a letter to parents.

This has put a strain on the remote learning offered to students quarantining due to COVID-19, according to the letter, with higher student numbers “making the learning environment less productive for many students.” Under Texas state requirements, students who test positive for COVID-19 or develop symptoms are excluded from in-person school for a minimum of 10 days from the start of symptoms or from the date of a positive test, Tim Clark, a spokesperson for the district, stated in an email.

If an elementary school student tests positive, but feels well enough to participate in learning, they are assigned to a “COVID support teacher,” Clark said. That teacher provides online lessons specific to each elementary grade level.
