Riley Keough and Gina Gammell say that funding their debut feature 'War Pony,' a coming-of-age story about two young men on a reservation, was an uphill battle.

along with several other projects. But the world of film financing is still dominated by white men, and Keough and Gammell were repeatedly told thatThey even attempted one suggestion, adding a white character who comes to visit the reservation before quickly deciding against it. “We were like, ‘Why are we making this about white people when that’s not how this was birthed?’” says Keough.

Once the financing was finally in place, Keough and Gammell were tasked with working with the first-time actors who made up the majority of the cast. Many of them were literally cast off the street, such as Matho’s group of friends, whom Keough and Gammell spotted running across the street by a gas station one day. “We just pulled over and were like, ‘Can we have your parents’ numbers?’” says Gammell.
