As the PM relaxes on one of his last few weekends at Chequers, he may be looking forward to having the time to complete the tome that may feel like a catalogue of his own political career. Of course, the Conservative Queen that still burns brightest in the memories of many members and MPs is Margaret Thatcher. That’s why we’ve seen an unseemly scramble this week as Truss and Sunak try to claim her mantle as their own.: “I am running as a Thatcherite, and I will govern as a Thatcherite”. He claims, with some justification, that his political idol always put balancing the books ahead of tax cuts.
But with just a few weeks until party members return their ballot papers, Sunak is playing catch-up after his rival hit the ground running with a vow to slash taxes from “Day One” of her premiership.
