On top of a punishing training regime, the 14-year-old Dublin native is maintaining strong grades in school
With international titles to her name and regular trips abroad, Gemma O’Brien isn’t your average teenager.In January she finished third in the Under-16 division of the United Kingdom Dance Championships in Bournemouth, one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments.She has won the Under-14 World Opens in Blackpool, as well as several Irish titles.
But it’s not all glitz and glamour. The training is punishing. Well, for most of us, anyway. Gemma can’t get enough of her time on the dancefloor. “But if it’s not so close to a competition, we’d have a day off. I’d say I practise two hours a day.” “It’s like a knockout. When you go out, you don’t just dance and then they mark it, it could be round four and then you go into the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.“I think in one of the competitions they only went to Germany and they had a bottle of Lucozade Sport and a bottle of water, and they just kept handing it to her.
