Last summer, RNLI lifeguards in Northern Ireland saved 13 lives, aided over 450 people and responded to over 300 incidents

The RNLI is still on the hunt for budding lifeguards in county Down in preparation for keeping beachgoers safe this summer. The charity’s lifeguards not only rescue those in difficulty in the water, they also provide vital beach first-aid and safety advice to ensure visitors can return home safely.Read more:Residents evacuated following early morning arson attack in Co Down

The peak summer season on the county’s RNLI beaches at Tyrella, Murlough and Cranfield runs for 24 June to 3 September with candidates needing to be available for lifeguard inductions running from 12-23 June. "Our lifeguards range from teenagers all the way up to lifesavers in their 70s, as long as you meet the fitness requirements and you are over 16 years old, there could be a role for you.

"I remember when I initially started lifeguarding being nervous about coming into a job with so much responsibility, but you get appropriate and effective training and as the season progresses and you get more experience and more knowledge, your confidence builds.
