The Cabinet Covid Committee meets today to decide on the pace of lifting all remaining restrictions
The Government has promised a new roadmap setting out a timeline for lifting restrictions, including limits on live events, religious services and exercise classes.Ministers will consider a NPHET recommendation that there should be no widespread further easing until 90% of those aged 16 and older are fully vaccinated. There are mixed views in Government on the proposal.
Some, including Minister for the Arts Catherine Martin who will attend today's meeting, believe the threshold is too high. The full Cabinet will meet on Tuesday to sign-off on the new roadmap. Yesterday, 1,866 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed by the Department of Health. There were 331 patients with the virus being treated in hospital and, of these, 61 were in intensive care units, which is the highest number since 3 April.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan urged people to get their Covid-19 vaccine, saying that vaccination "remains our best means of protection". NPHET said the total number of Covid-related deaths in Ireland stands at 5,092 - up 18 since it reported data on deaths last Wednesday.
