Three gardaí from Co Meath stepped in to help deliver a baby on the M4 after the mother went into labour on the way to hospital in Dublin.
Garda Kyle Waters, Garda Kalla Mangan Maguire and Garda Paul Rushe, attached to the Trim District, were on overnight duty at 5am on Wednesday 11 October when an emergency call came through to attend at Junction 9 on the M4.
On arrival at the roadside, they were met by a man who told them that he was driving his partner to the maternity hospital as she was experiencing contractions. However, her labour had quickly progressed and by the time the couple had reached J9, she was already in the late stages. Garda Mangan Maguire helped the mother to get as comfortable as possible in the car as the time came to give birth.Garda Waters and Garda Rushe provided traffic control along the M4 which was picking up as it neared commuter hour.
The National Ambulance Service arrived and stepped in to provide medical care and to take the family to the maternity hospital.
