Former Ireland international Robbie Keane continues his unconventional managerial journey by taking charge of Hungarian powerhouse Ferencvaros.

Robbie Keane ’s surprise appointment as the manager of Hungarian side Ferencvaros underlines the fact that the former Ireland international is not averse to going off the beaten track to launch his managerial career . After a brief stint as player-manager of ATK in India, where he finished his playing career, he took charge of Maccabi Tel Aviv in June 2023 after spells on the coaching staff with Middlesbrough, Leeds United and Ireland.

His time in Israel was successful in a sporting context as he guided the club to the League title and League Cup in his only season at the helm, as well as the last 16 of the Conference League, where they lost narrowly to eventual winners Olympiacos, but Keane resigned last year having shipped political criticism for working in Israel amid the country’s ongoing conflict with Palestine. He’s back in the dugout now, however, succeeding Pascal Jansen at the helm of Hungary’s biggest and most successful club, who have won the League title in each of the last five seasons.
