Before 1930, Robert Brennan moved from the Neidin to Snaidhm, a place where the fight for the Irish language was still ongoing. Though not many people today remember him, Brennan played a crucial role in the development of the national movement . A native of County Wexford, he joined the Gaelic League in his youth.
That experience shaped his philosophy regarding the revival of the Irish language: like many others in the language movement, he believed that the language was a central element in the fight for freedom and a tool for national awakening. He was a republican and journalist, and was sentenced to death several years before his journey from the Neidin to Snaidhm, in connection with leading the Easter Rising in Inis Córthaidh, County Wexford, in 1916. But that sentence was not carried out, and instead of being executed, he was given a prison term, and spent time in jail in England before being released. During that time he continued to engage with national issues. He was involved in devising Sinn Féin's strategy for the national election in 1918. In late 1921 he traveled with the delegation that went from Ireland to London to negotiate peace with Britain. However, during the talks, he left to seek support for the Republic in major European capitals. But he went against the agreements reached and resigned from his post as foreign affairs secretary
