Roberto Firmino has lifted the lid on the difficulties of communicating his desire to leave Liverpool to Jurgen Klopp - insisting the conversation "felt like an eternity".
Now, in a newly-released book detailing his lengthy spell at Anfield, 'Si Senor: My Liverpool Years', Firmino has revealed that a late substitute appearance in a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the start of March was the moment that "broke the camel's back" before swiftly informing Klopp of his decision.
"I reflected a lot and realized that God’s plan was to take me somewhere else. The signs were all there since that conversation with Pastor Daniel in Maceio. I had been stubborn. In a season of transition at Anfield, Firmino had fallen down the pecking order as Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo made the move to Liverpool in June and January respectively as Klopp looked to future-proof his forward line.
"He looked at me and said, ‘I think I know what you want to talk about’. I’m not sure if he knew. Maybe he thought I was going to complain about not getting many minutes. Maybe he knew the topic could be my departure. I had my phone in my hand. I opened the note titled ‘Meeting’. "He had fought to keep my friend Philippe Coutinho a few years back; I didn’t want the same to happen with me. Now, having finally accepted the inevitable, I took the step I had never wanted to take."
