Asked by the Irish Mirror at Bord Bia Bloom if he was worried that immigration has the potential to derail the Government parties during the elections, Roderic O’Gorman insisted that constructive conversations are happening on the doorsteps.
Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman has dismissed suggestions that the immigration issue will damage the Government parties during next week’s European and local elections.
Asked by the Irish Mirror at Bord Bia Bloom if he was worried that immigration has the potential to derail the Government parties during the elections, Mr O’Gorman insisted that constructive conversations are happening on the doorsteps.“It's coming up for a host of issues. It's coming up for people who want Ireland to continue to be a welcoming country to migrants.
Asked if people are receptive to what Minister O’Gorman is telling them about immigration, he argued that he can “point to the fact that the numbers being processed are increasing”. Several candidates who are running in both the local and European elections have been branded “far-right”. However, most have rejected this label.
“One person accosted me there recently, someone who I'd never seen involved in a tidy town or in a community group or on their local school board. “I think these people who are trying to nationalise and even regionalise a local election, I think many of them will get a shock on election day.”
