He has been kept busy since leaving Radio 1
Don’t mention the word retirement to Ronan Collins. Even though the legendary broadcaster bid farewell to his lunchtime show on RTÉ Radio 1 in December, he has never been busier.
Here, he chats to RSVP about his new show with RTÉ Gold, spending more time with his wife Woody, their three children and two grandchildren, and why he doesn’t believe in regrets.It sounds like a cliché but I haven’t had a minute since! I was busy with the Reeling In The Showband Years tour and I’ve barely had time to think about the end of the lunchtime show. But that’s exactly what I wanted in stepping down. I wanted more time to focus on things other than the show.

Back in December 2021, you told us you had no intention of stepping down – what changed for you in that time? Covid didn’t make any difference to my RTÉ work routine. I continued to go in every day and enjoyed the show hugely. I was also quite overwhelmed because our numbers went up so much! We went up to about 285k listeners. It was very satisfying to know that there were so many people listening and relying on me to pass on best wishes to people that they couldn’t see. But also what happened was that in January 2020, Larry Gogan died. Larry and I really were great friends.
