IRFU Performance Director David Humphreys confirms Ronan O'Gara will be a prime candidate for Leinster's head coach job when Leo Cullen steps down in 2027, and outlines the union's approach to the succession.

The Irish Rugby Football Union's ( IRFU) Performance Director, David Humphreys, has indicated that Ronan O'Gara will be a leading candidate for the Leinster head coach position when it becomes available in 2027.

Current Leinster coach Leo Cullen is slated to depart at the end of the upcoming season, a timeline that coincides with the expiration of O'Gara's contract as head coach of French Top 14 club La Rochelle. Humphreys, speaking from Sydney, confirmed he has discussed O'Gara's future ambitions and praised his decision to gain international coaching experience, stating that such a background makes him a contender for any high-profile Irish coaching role.

He emphasized the strength of the Irish coaching pool, suggesting O'Gara would be among a long list of qualified applicants. Other names in the frame include former Leinster out-half and Argentina head coach Felipe Contepomi, whose contract runs through the 2027 Rugby World Cup, and former Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt, who has not dismissed speculation about a return to Leinster.

Stuart Lancaster, currently with Connacht, is also mentioned; Humphreys lauded his impact in the western province and noted his contract also ends in 2027, though the IRFU expressed satisfaction with his progress. Humphreys revealed that initial conversations about the succession plan have already occurred with Leinster CEO Shane Nolan and COO Guy Easterby. The role will be an IRFU contract, as with other provincial head coaches, and the union anticipates a pool of high-quality candidates.

The appointment timeline may be complicated by the 2027 World Cup, as the IRFU may prefer a coach not tied to an international team. Humphreys also addressed Leinster's operational structure, noting that while other provinces have appointed general managers to handle off-pitch duties, Leinster already effectively operates this way with Guy Easterby fulfilling those responsibilities. He stressed the importance of finding a coach who complements the existing setup and maximizes player development.

Regarding the division of roles, Humphreys suggested the specific titles are less important than the overall function, citing Cullen's director-of-rugby style and the contributions of assistants like Jacques Nienaber. Despite recent criticism of Nienaber's defensive system and its perceived clash with the Irish national team's approach, Humphreys defended the double World Cup-winning coach, highlighting his success with Leinster.

The search will weigh the need for continuity and alignment with both provincial and national strategies, ensuring the next leader can sustain Leinster's competitiveness while feeding talent into the Irish setup
