The roof of the sports hall at Tralee Regional Sports and Leisure Centre in Kerry, Ireland collapsed early this morning due to heavy snowfall. Thankfully, no one was inside at the time.
Emergency services have sealed off a regional sports centre in Kerry after the roof of its sports hall collapsed early this morning following heavy snowfall in the area. Fortunately, nobody was inside Tralee Regional Sports and Leisure Centre when the roof capsized around 7am. Emergency services attended the scene and secured the building.
A photograph of the centre, known locally as Tralee Sports Complex, shows extensive damage to the roof of the facility, which has entirely collapsed on the 32x26-metre sports hall. The hall has served as a venue for college conferrings and concerts in the past, as well as being used for basketball, badminton, and a variety of other sports. The complex and the surrounding grounds have been closed to the public, and an assessment will be carried out to determine the next steps, according to Jim Finucane, the chairman of the centre. “At approximately 7am on Monday, January 6, emergency services were called to the Tralee Sports Complex, following the collapse of the roof of the Sports Hall,” he said. “The building, which was closed at the time, was secured by the emergency services and the building and grounds have been closed to the public. It is intended to carry out an assessment of the building to determine the next steps.” The complex has operated for more than 40 years, providing two swimming pools and a gym for people of the area. It is co-owned by Kerry County Council and Kerry Education and Training Board. Management was in the process of upgrading many of the sports facilities in the centre prior to this morning’s incident, including the installation of a new floor in the sports hall
