The Rockets’ five rookies combined to score 84 points against the Timberwolves.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns, left, shoots as Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun defends during the first half of an NBA basketball game Sunday, April 3, 2022, in Houston. The Rockets entered Sunday having lost three consecutive games by a margin of two possessions. Two of those were by three points. For the final three quarters of Sunday’s seven-point loss to the Timberwolves, the game was not even close to being decided by one basket.

“Nowadays in the NBA a 20-point lead, you can come back from that easily,” said Josh Christopher, who sparked the fourth-quarter rally. “You have a lot of 3s that are going up and as fast as we push the pace, we can run up points easily and the guys that we have can fill it up really quickly as well.”

“Man’s a killer,” Christopher said. “Boy ballin’. We all know that. Everybody was talking crazy at the beginning of the year. I think he might have needed to lose that dunk contest, too, to give him extra motivation. After the All-Star break he was like, ‘I’m just gonna try and average 20 for the rest of the year,’ which he is very capable of doing.”

Center Usman Garuba, Houston’s fourth draft pick who spent most of the last two months sidelined by a wrist surgery, played 15 minutes off the bench and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field with six rebounds. Undrafted guard Daishen Nix’s shooting struggles continued , but he dished five assists with two turnovers in just 14 minutes.Silas credited the Rockets’ improved fourth-quarter defense to a ballsy request made by Sengun.
