After surging into the co-lead of the U.S. Open alongside Patrick Cantlay, Rory McIlroy experienced a turbulent second round to sit three-under heading into the weekend
Rory McIlroy predicted nobody would run away with victory a la Martin Kraymer after the four-time major champion lost his grip on the U.S. Open lead at Pinehurst No. 2.
Back in 2014, the last time the U.S. Open was contested at Pinehurst No. 2, Kraymer surged to an eight-shot win. But McIlroy, who is three-under heading into the weekend, does not see history repeating itself 10 years on. “With the way the golf course is and the way some of those hole locations are, I don't see anyone running away with it today, building up too much of a lead. That's certainly what Martin did a few years ago here. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out this afternoon.” McIlroy suffered early bogeys on 11 and the par-three 15th. He retaliated with a crucial birdie on the third - not to mention a chip in to secure par before the turn - only to suffer another bogey to close out a tumultuous round in challenging conditions.The 35-year-old lamented the notoriously difficult greens: “It just requires a lot more thought. Even though I hit a great drive up the 8th hole, I had 151 adjusted to the hole. I'm trying to land it 146.
