Mackenzie Hughes was in contention at the Scottish Open, but his chances of making a move up the leaderboard were scuppered before he even hit his first shot on Saturday
PGA Tour star Mackenzie Hughes committed a cardinal golfing error on Saturday, arriving late for his tee time at the Scottish Open.
The 33-year-old was hit with a two-shot penalty, hampering his chances of moving up the leaderboard. Despite parring the opening hole, it was recorded as a double-bogey six on the card due to the penalty.READ MORE: Tiger Woods told bluntly to retire on eve of The Open - 'What the hell is he doing?' Hughes, to his credit, managed to quickly regain his composure, scoring birdies on holes three, six and 10 to move under par for the day. However, he lost a shot at the 12th, dropping back to eight-under. He ended his round one-under for the day and nine-under for the tournament, seven shots behind leader Aberg.
Earlier this year, Tom Kim narrowly dodged a late penalty at The Genesis Invitation. With an 8am. start alongside Rickie Fowler, Kim lost track of time while practicing putts and had to dash through fans to escape a two-stroke penalty.
