Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele have been the two best golfers in the world this season, winning three of the four majors along with Olympic gold in a dominant 2024 season
Rory McIlroy believes Scottie Scheffler had a better season than Xander Schauffele, highlighting how the Northern Irishman craves a Masters title.
As a result, McIlroy heads into the first play-off event of the FedEx Cup - the FedEx St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind – almost 3,500 points behind world No. 1 Scheffler. The American won six times on the PGA Tour, collecting his second green jacket, before securing Olympic gold at Le Golf National. Even though Schauffele won more majors than his compatriot in 2024, McIlroy would rather take Scheffler’s season. Speaking from Memphis, the 35-year-old - who has won every major except the Masters - said: “Winning The Masters, an Olympic gold medal, whatever it is, six times, it's pretty hard to top that.”
Victory at Augusta National followed in April, donning the green jacket for the second time as he expertly navigated windy conditions. Scheffler’s run continued as he won the RBC Heritage title eight days later.Another double followed in June, winning both the Memorial Tournament and the Travelers as he established himself as the best player on the planet. While Scheffler clinched two majors, Scheffler won at the Olympics to add a golden tinge to his season.
