Westmeath Rose Rachel Duffy was crowned the winner last year

Rose of Tralee winner Rachel Duffy is warning viewers to "be kind" to this year’s batch of contestants.

The 24-year-old was crowned winner of the competition last year, making her the first Rose of Tralee winner from Westmeath. Taking to Instagram ahead of the festival’s return on Monday and Tuesday night, Rachel reminded her followers that "roses are real people", and that the five minutes you see of them on stage is "only a snapshot of the festival".She said the women are "acting as role models, supporting charity, cultural and social organisations and are very bravely putting themselves on live television for your entertainment".

In 2021 it announced that married women were able to enter the festival as well as transgender women and the maximum age for entries was raised to 29.Join our new WhatsApp community!
