Trea Turner’s defensive metrics at shortstop have improved significantly over the past six weeks. When I asked him why, he said, with a hint of sarcasm, “All I had to do was play three feet closer and the algorithm liked me more.”and his agency, CAA, to determine why his metrics were poor; entering May 15, he was -4 in the range component of defensive runs saved, according to Sports Info Solutions.
Turner said by positioning himself closer, he started making the same plays as other shortstops instead of getting “dinged” in the defensive calculations. He feels his throwing is much better than it was last season, and that his defense at short overall is the best of his career. So in his mind, the metrics were not reflecting how well he was performing.
“The only thing I could figure out is that I needed to make the play going in. Then if I scoot up and make the plays, I’m as good as them, I guess? That’s the answer I came up with. I don’t know if it’s right. I’m still debating it.”
