Stuart was diagnosed with early-stage ocular (choroid) melanoma in his left eye after his optician, Teresa spotted something that wasn't right - an abnormal dark patch
Reporting by Isabelle Bates and Howard Lloyd
Stuart was diagnosed with early-stage ocular melanoma in his left eye. Teresa said the retina is typically orange-red, but she saw a 'very dark grey area' just off to the side. The optician asked Stuart to return the following day so she could dilate his pupils and perform an Optical Coherence Tomography scan , reportsThe scan offered Teresa a clearer view of Stuart's eye, and it showed an issue, meaning a referral to the hospital.
Stuart had Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography scans to ensure the cancer was localised to his eye, and it turned out it was, so they agreed on a treatment plan. He said the doctor told him the cancer was 'pretty rare', with less than 700 cases per year in the UK.
Stuart returned to New Cross for a follow-up appointment, and he learned that the cancer was contained to his eye, and the proton beam therapy had worked, but the cancer would not disappear completely. He said he must now have check-ups every six months and, as this type of cancer can spread to the liver, has that checked too.
