Irish viewers have been waiting for a long time to see the series The Westies, which follows the leader of the Westies, Eamon Sweeney. The series, starring Oscar-winner J. K. Simmons, had been released abroad on a streaming service unavailable in Ireland.
When construction begins on the giant Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on their home turf, Sweeney makes a fragile alliance with Italian Mafia rivals to secure a piece of the financial windfall. However, tensions between the Irish and Italian gangs rise, threatening Sweeney's deal and pulling the Westies into an investigation by the FBI. The series also stars Titus Welliver as a corrupt NYPD officer who has a history with the Westies.
Bridget, Jimmy's girlfriend, a former IRA soldier, finds herself pulled back into her old life. BOOM Studios has released a sneak peek of The Westies, and JOE recommends it for its period setting, blend of pulp crime storytelling and real history, and charismatic performances. The series will be coming soon to the RTÉ Player, although no release date has been set.
The Irish broadcaster has also confirmed that Hardy Bucks, the beloved Irish comedy series, will be returning for a new season. Additionally, RTÉ has set a release date for Tall Tales & Murder, the new crime thriller series co-created by Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan and Chris Addison. The series is a darkly comedic Irish crime thriller that re-teams Carolan with star Aidan Gillen. It will be available on the BBC and RTÉ very soon.
As RTÉ marks its 100 years of public service broadcasting in Ireland, the broadcaster is focusing on home-grown storytelling, and the new season will feature several Irish series and dramas. This includes the second season of The Traitors Ireland, which unfolds in a similar manner to the first season. RTÉ is committing heavily to home-grown storytelling, rather than relying on acquisitions, and the new season will feature several Irish series and dramas.
