An Irish columnist criticizes RTE's decision to spend almost €2 million on €1,000 gift vouchers for staff while the broadcaster faces financial challenges.
I'd be happy with a €1,000 gift voucher from RTE but I'm not feeling the love... There's one for everyone who's not in the audience. Many in my line of work have called RTE the gift that keeps giving - particularly when the Toy Man, or Ryan to his friends, started having gates attached to everything around him. You could pick your gate of choice from Tubs-gate, Payments-gate, Late Late-gate, Renault-gate, Oireachtas Committee-gate.
Barter account-gate is still easier to remember than understand. We're now in The Fear' And amid all those gates he was eventually shown a door. And many in my line of work have rebranded RTE as Cash-strapped RTE. We're all feeling the pinch these days. Which is why a €1,000 gift voucher would be nice. Especially when I've been throwing my cash at RTE for years... A recap on what I'll call €1,000 RTE gift voucher-gate for those needing: Cash-strapped RTE's splashing out almost €2 million on vouchers... for RTE staff. 'Ho! Ho! Ho-ly f***!' was my initial festive and part-expletive reaction to hearing this news. I know Dublin 4's not the cheapest place to buy turkeys, but... a tad too generous perhaps? By a tad, I mean maybe €990 too generous? Possibly even €1,000 too generous given how it's my licence fee that's paying for it. To put a €1,000 gift voucher into context, and to keep it slightly holy so we don't forget the true meaning of Christmas, that's €55.55 for each of the eighteen bongs of the Angelus. It takes six TV Licences just to put one €1,000 gift voucher into a stocking. €1,000 is the sort of cash I pray for - but Kevin Bakhurst is delegating to God who's not looking on me favourably. It's not like C-sRTE's top earners have been struggling to buy stockings eithe
