A document obtained by the Irish Mirror reveals that a significant number of RTE staff, classified as managers, received a pay rise last year despite the station facing financial difficulties. The Director General, Kevin Bakhurst, addressed staff concerns about the high number of managers in the organization, stating that there will be a reduction in the number of managers moving forward. He also expressed support for a new pay rise for all RTE staff and confirmed that negotiations with unions will commence soon.
A staggering one in five staff in RTE are classified as managers in their contracts and they got a pay rise over a year ago even though the station was skint.
"There are 300 people in RTE characterised as managers. They may be line managers or may not manage people. Many managers are brilliant and some are not so good.He urged staff to respect people and not to be disparaging because of a manager's title. "Pay has been addressed in some areas. For example, pay bands at RnaG have been brought in line with radio producers."
The state allocated €225 million for RTE this year plus €60 million for TG4. RTE recorded a deficit of €9.1 million in 2023. An investigation was carried out by the Department of Social Protection and Revenue into the scandal.
