Independent Senator Rónán Mullen says his legislation would provide “the remuneration [of a broadcaster] cannot exceed the salary, the annual salary allowance, of the Minister for Communications. That’s a figure of €195,000.”

“Some will say that’s too high, some will say that’s too low. But I think the principle is important because these days we need to keep our perspective here. There are actually bigger problems facing the country right now. We mustn’t be distracted by them,” Mr Mullen said. The situation had developed in RTÉ where the salaries of some people had gotten out of control, there was a culture of excess that had been very damaging to public confidence in the broadcaster, he said. “We’ve maybe focused too much on corporate values and not enough on community values.”

“It also provides that there are penalties for knowingly causing inaccurate information about salaries. But in the end, this is about recognising the contribution of everybody.
