Up for the craic: RTÉ sports presenter Des Cahill on life as a grandfather, his wedding anniversary, ruling out retirement and his son Paul following in his footsteps in media

After nearly 40 years at RTÉ, sports presenter Des Cahill still gets energised by his work. His career has seen him travel the world covering everything from the World Cup to the Olympics, and nowadays he is mostly based in Ireland where he presents Sunday Sport and Up For The Match. Des is showing no signs of slowing down either.

It’s 39 years since we married – and she still looks like a teen bride! I’m boxing above my weight there, definitely. She’s a Donegal woman. She avoids the spotlight and all that, but she should be in the spotlight rather than me, it would make more sense! Caroline’s very social, she loves sing-songs… In fact, she’s so social to the point that I’m like “Jesus not again, where are we going now!” You seem very happy together? We are, absolutely.

You were great on Dancing With The Stars in 2017 Des, were your family surprised when you went on the show? Absolutely, they’ve nearly more female than male presenters at this stage! It’s great, and I’d like to think they’ve found me helpful.Oh God, no! I’ve asked Jacqui for advice once or twice when we were on a night out but that’s only about how everyone is going to get home .

You’ve said previously the abuse you get isn’t always about things you’ve said, but people pick on your hair and your appearance? How do you deal with that? I like slagging pundits over where they’re from sometimes and I think people get me, I’ve been around long enough. It’s very difficult now if you say something about a county as someone will write in to RTÉ. People who have been following sport for years know me and know that I love all the counties, and that I love sport. People who don’t know me wouldn’t get that. So you have to be careful. Being light-hearted now is risky.
