Viewers react strongly to the latest episode of 'The Great House Revival' featuring a minimalist cottage renovation in the Burren.
RTE viewers were deeply divided by the property transformation in last night's episode of The Great House Revival. Architect Hugh Wallace traveled to County Clare to assist restauranteur Aoibheann in restoring a cottage in the Burren . Due to the area's stringent planning and environmental restrictions, Aoibheann had ample time to establish a full kitchen garden to supply her restaurant in Galway City, as well as accommodate two tenants – Crunchie and Phoebe, the two miniature ponies.
She possessed a clear vision for her desired outcome and hoped that, with Hugh's guidance and the assistance of her local builder, John Cannole, a no-nonsense, true-blue County Clare man, they could successfully revive the project. Ultimately, her dream materialized as she unveiled a stunning white property perfectly suited for a peaceful retreat. The home was minimalist in design, but it featured a unique architectural element – alternate tread stairs, also known as witches' stairs. The final result elicited a range of opinions from viewers, with some deeming it too sterile and criticizing the staircase, while others wholeheartedly embraced its aesthetic. One viewer commented on X, “It's not for me.....too much white! The bed and the upstairs are completely inaccessible for anyone with mobility issues. No idea how she got sign off on the death stairs! Best of luck to her.... it's her dream and that's the main thing!” Another viewer echoed this sentiment, stating, “The stairs!!! A climbing wall would be easier to climb.” Another viewer criticized the minimalist design, saying, “She basically wants to live in a modern art gallery! #everythingwhite So bloody sterile!” Despite the criticism, several viewers expressed admiration for the house and its design. One viewer wrote, “I love the house and the vision. The walls of the Burren! My god! Perfection. But, whatever became of the original Victorian rolltop bath?” Another viewer agreed, stating, “The house, lovely, but a bit minimalist for me. The point, though, is that is exactly what it should be in that location because, my god, the views. Stunning!” A final viewer commented on the positive aspects of the renovation, writing, “Wonderful site in the Burren and a lovely home created by Aoibheann. Loved her attitude to the landscape and the tone she wanted for her home.” Some viewers also enjoyed the dynamic between Aoibheann and her builder John, writing, “Absolutely love Aoibheann's house. A brilliantly funny episode. If only she, Hugh and John the builder could be on every week.”
