Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is one of the favourites to succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford
The Dutchman was sacked on Monday in the wake of a 2-1 defeat to West Ham which extended United’s worst start to a Premier League season. The Reds are 14th in the table and Ruud van Nistelrooy will now take interim charge while a new head coach is sought.
Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim is among the leading contenders given his work in Portugal. Sporting are defending champions and have a perfect domestic record so far this season while they have also caught the eye in the Champions League.Amorim is among the bookies' favourites for the United job while he has also been heavily touted as a potential replacement for when Pep Guardiola leaves Manchester City given the Blues’ decision to name Sporting’s Hugo Viana as their next technical director.
United, who have also been linked with ex-Barcelona boss Xavi and former England chief Gareth Southgate, would have to fork out significant compensation to prise Amorim away from Portugal. When asked about the United links on Monday, the 43-year-old would not be drawn on the future. He said: “I was expecting that question and obviously I’m not going to talk about the future, because otherwise I’ll always have to comment, so it’s not worth it, I won’t comment,’ I’m very proud to be the coach of Sporting, that’s all.”
