After earning 39 caps for the Ireland rugby team, Hugo decided to step away and put his focus on Ireland’s Rugby Sevens in a bid to medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games
Hugo Keenan has been a steadfast feature of the Ireland rugby team since 2020, however, he was missing from their recent South Africa tour.
He was brought on to the Ireland national rugby sevens team camp in early 2017 and was part of their panel during the 2017 Grand Prix Series. He scored several tries during Ireland's win at the 2017 Moscow Sevens. “Everyone was hugely supportive,” he told 42.ie. “I talked to coaches in Sevens, Toppers and a few of the key players in the Sevens setup. Terry , Bryan Mollen, lads I would be really close with.
“It’s definitely been challenging in that regard and now it’s tough not being down in South Africa because you’d love to test yourself against the best team in the world, the World Cup champs, in their backyard. She is often seen supporting her boyfriend and was in the stands cheering him on during the Rugby World Cup in Paris last year.
“The lads are good craic and we get on well. There is other stuff besides rugby. It’s not like rugby is dominating the chat at all,” he told The Irish Sun back in July.
