As energy costs remain high and households try to keep the bills down, understanding the cost of running a fan becomes worth knowing

Based on the current energy tariffs, running a desktop fan for nine hours during your sleep would amount to a weekly cost of approximately 74p. However, starting from July when, the cost is expected to decrease slightly to around 67p per week.

Opting for a pedestal fan will result in slightly higher weekly costs. Currently, using an average pedestal fan for nine hours amounts to approximately £1.26 per week - from July this drops to around £1.15.For households who have portable aircon units, which according to Uswitch is around one million homes, the costs are even higher. Running a portable air conditioning unit for nine hours amounts to approximately £21.

On the other hand, those with built-in air conditioning units face higher costs, averaging around £56.76 per week for nine hours of usage. However, with the new pricing adjustments in July, this expense will decrease to approximately £51.60 per week., said: “Energy prices may be falling on July 1, but costs can still add up when trying to stay cool in a heatwave, especially if your air conditioning unit is running around the clock.

“Keeping your curtains closed during the day will stop sunlight from warming up your home, while filling a hot water bottle with cold water can help keep you cool.”Alongside its data, Uswitch also shared some energy saving tips on how to stay cool when the temperature rises.Place a bowl of ice cubes in front of an electric fan to create a refreshing breeze as it blows the ice-cold air around the room.Keep your curtains shut during the day.
