Burnley Borough Council’s development control committee will meet to approve the project

Councillors have been recommended to approve a battery energy storage system on open grassland on the outskirts of an East Lancashire town.

The scheme will be considered by Burnley Borough Council’s development control committee on Thursday night because of public objections over noise, safety and the impact on trees. A planning officer’s report recommending approval says: “The site sits within an existing Protected Employment Site – Heasandford and Innovation Drive. Furthermore, the site has a specific employment allocation.

“Consequently, National Grid estimates that electricity storage will need to increase significantly to support the decarbonisation of the system. The site will be operated remotely so there will not be any fulltime staff on site. There will be one to two operators going on site on a part-time basis.
