Russia has ordered troops to withdraw from the key city of Kherson, but Ukrainian officials remain wary of their intentions.
Inscriptions “Time Z” and “Mined” are scrawled on the gate into the backyard of a local household goods store left by Russian soldiers on Oct. 24 in Velyka Oleksandrivka, Ukraine, in the Kherson Oblast, which had been under Russian occupation for almost seven months.
Surovikin also argued that the troops freed up by Russia’s withdrawal from the west bank of the river could now be used in further offensive operations in other areas of Ukraine. He failed to point out this is also true for Ukraine’s forces — with the southern front secured and the threat to Mykolaiv, Odesa and Kryvyi Rih significantly reduced, Kyiv will be able to redeploy significant numbers of their own battle-hardened troops in future offensive operations in other directions.
Although the decision was only finally announced Wednesday, it seems apparent it had been made several weeks ago. Russian forces had been systematically withdrawing both civilian and military personnel and looting anything of value in the occupied area on the west bank over the past month.
