The president of the Rutgers Adjunct Faculty Union emphasizes that the workloads of part-time professors is equal to that of full-time faculty. She is calling on the president of Rutgers to hike the pay to match the work.The principle of “Equal Pay for Equal Work” as a requirement of federal law will turn 60 years old next year when we celebrate the anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in June 1963.

Our proposal is simple: raise the pay of adjuncts to match the per-course pay of faculty members who do the same work but are classified as full-time, non-tenure-track faculty.
When students ask them for advice or additional support, PTLs don’t say, “No, that’s not my job.” They do this work because they believe in education, and they care about their students. We want the administration to recognize that we are all Rutgers faculty.
