Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar accompanied candidate Michael Shanks to the count at the Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election – and says he thinks “a really historic night in Scottish politics” is in store.
The pair entered the count venue at South Lanarkshire Council headquarters at 12.30am to cheers and applause from party supporters and activists as work went on to count the 30,531 ballots from the Westminster poll. Mr Sarwar told Lanarkshire Live: “I think it’s a turning point for Scottish politics – of course we need to wait for the result being announced, but I think it’s really clear that the people of Rutherglen & Hamilton West have sent a direct message to both the SNP and the Tory governments that their time is coming to an end .
Voter turnout was announced just after midnight, with election officials confirming that 37.19 per cent of eligible voters cast their ballots. And did you know Lanarkshire Live had its own app? Download yours for free here.
