Ryan Reynolds has an appropriately hilarious reaction to reuniting with Free Guy and The Adam Project director Shawn Levy for Deadpool 3. Since making his true debut as the Merc with the Mouth, Reynolds’ fourth wall-breaking mutant has become one of cinema’s most popular comic book characters. Tim Miller's Deadpool and David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 are a pair of the highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time.
Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four were brought under the control of Marvel Studios. Despite Reynolds’ inimitable popularity as the character, it was unclear how Wade Wilson’s R-rated irreverence would fit into the family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After the success of Free Guy, as well as the film’s pop culture awareness, and positive reviews for The Adam Project, Levy has become a fan-favorite option to helm Deadpool 3. On top of those films, the director and producer’s credits include the Night at the Museum franchise, Real Steel , Netflix's Stranger Things, and Arrival .
Levy’s involvement with Deadpool 3 hasn’t officially been announced by the studio, but the director’s relationship with Reynolds more than bodes well for the deal. Coming off of Free Guy and The Adam Project, the pair are on a creative roll. While their third movie together will be quite different, as Levy has never directed an R-rated movie, the director has proven his comedic and action sensibilities.
