Brendan Martin was one of the pioneers behind the formation of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association some 50 years ago.
One of the great visionaries of Irish sport who pioneered the establishment of ladies football, Brendan Martin, has passed away.
He replaced it with a more elegant trophy for the 25th anniversary in 1999 and this version of The Brendan Martin Cup has been presented to the All-Ireland winning captain every year since, with Kerry’s Niamh Carmody the most recent recipient in August following their win over Galway, a game which the late Mr Martin attended.
Sufficient momentum was gathered from there for the staging of the first All-Ireland championship the following year, with Tipperary and his native Offaly contesting the final.
