Fines of up to €20 million form part of Coimisiún na Meán’s newly updated code for video-sharing platforms with EU headquarters in Ireland

Fines of up to €20 million form part of Coimisiún na Meán’s newly updated code for video-sharing platforms with EU headquarters in IrelandThe regulator’s code aims to protect those online from harmful content and to hold video-sharing platforms to account. Platforms will face fines of up to €20 million for breaches of rules under the code, which will be legally binding later this year.

But a bit boring if I am honest’The Online Safety Code also seeks to protect users from incitement to hatred or violence, terrorism, child abuse material, racism and xenophobia.

Niamh Hodnett, the online safety commissioner, said the updated code is an important step forward to hold platforms to account for keeping people safe online. “All platforms will have to comply with our Online Safety Code, it’s not an optional code, it’s underpinned by significant administrative sanctions up to 10 per cent of turnover or €20 million,” she said.

Ms Hodnett said Coimisiún na Meán is supporting the European Commission with investigations into “toxic feeds” and “harmful algorithms”.
