St. Augustine tops Santana 7-6 in nine innings in Lions tourney
Losers of three games in a row and trailing by four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, No. 3-ranked St. Augustine appeared to be dead and buried.
The Saints scored four runs in the seventh, three on a game-tying homer by leadoff man Frankie Carney and another in the ninth when Carney scored on Frankie Giacalone’s sacrifice fly to left field for an improbable 7-6, nine-inning win over No. 4 Santana in the Mike Morrow Bracket of the Classic Division of the 71st annual Lions Tournament.
St. Augustine answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning with Carney scoring one of those runs.Leading 6-2, Harris went out the to finish the game for Santana, but walked two hitters and gave up an RBI double to pinch-hitter Dominic Gross, setting the stage for Carney.“It looked like a beach ball. I put a good swing on it, and knew it was out the second I made contact.”A nifty 5-3 double play, started by third baseman Giacalone, got the Saints out of trouble in the ninth.
