Is it the end of the beginning for folder phones or the beginning of the end? We put Samsung's flagship folder to the test and, spoiler alert, we still love what it brings to the table.
I tested Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 folder phone before the arrival of two of its biggest competitors, Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Honor’s Magic V3, which both arrived this month.
And I recently tested out Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip 6 folder phone and recommended it as the folding phone most suitable for most people. For Z Fold 6, if you want to use an S-Pen, you need to buy it, and a carrying case for it, separately, bumping up the price even more. And when it comes to everyday use, Samsung’s large number of cleverly optimised folder-specific features run super smoothly as you would expect from any brand on its sixth iteration of a product.Galaxy AI Z Fold 6 includes all the fun new Galaxy AI features such as the foldable-specific interpreter mode that puts translated text on the cover screen so you can prop the phone up in Flex mode and show it to someone else for live translation of conversations.
And you get popular Google AI features such as the Gemini app built in and Circle to Search, which is so useful. I love the super bright and colourful displays on Z Fold 6 too. Both the 6.3in OLED panel on the outside and the 7.6in inner display feel superfast and responsive thanks to their 120Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness on both screens is 2,600 nits. You can see them easily outdoors.
There is no charging brick in the box, only a USB-C to USB-C charging cable, but that is par for the course on phones from Samsung, Apple, Honor and Google. Other Galaxy Z Fold 6 features The Z Fold 6 model l tested had 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, which is enough for most people, but you can also opt for 512GB and 1TB versions. There’s no support for expandable storage, incidentally.
Z Fold 6 has dual-band GNNS and its GPS tracking compares favourably with wearables such as Coros Vertix 2 and Polar Grit X2 Pro.The power button on the side doubles up as a fingerprint sensor that is fast and reliable.
