From loss to mystery, three Saskatchewan photographers share their inspiration for focusing their lenses on the aurora borealis.

It was a new concept for Melville photographer Tracy Kerestesh, but one she said perfectly describes how she feels when she’s out there watching the lights.

“After he passed away, I just had to find something to keep me going so I did a little bit of a bucket list. I got my scuba licence, I got a Harley Davidson,” Kerestesh said. A love of night photography led Boan to seek out and shoot the aurora over the past decade. He said the Prairies offer unique opportunities to document the phenomenon.

“When people go out for the first time, sometimes they’re disappointed,” Boan said. “Sometimes they can’t find it because they’re looking for that really bright colourful display that they see in the pictures and that’s not what our eyes detect.”Article content
