ICYMI: Saskatchewan health system on alert for cyberattack
In an “urgent” request last week, ehealth Saskatchewan, the Crown corporation that stewards the province’s electronic health infrastructure, warned Saskatchewan Health Authority employees to reset their passwords.
Lorri Thacyk, a spokeswoman for eHealth, wrote in a prepared statement that the corporation was “made aware of a phishing attack in which an email with an infected PDF attachment was sent to users in the health system.” Canada’s cybersecurity watchdog says it’s on the lookout for electronic attacks on critical Canadian infrastructure, including health-care systems, in light of “recent geopolitical events” that have “elevated the risk of cyber threats” — an apparent reference to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Canada’s support for the besieged nation.Article content
A 2020 attack on eHealth Saskatchewan paralyzed swaths of systems. A subsequent investigation by the province’s privacy commissioner said at least 547,145 files containing personal information were compromised, although the actual extent of the infiltration may never be known.
