Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich approached Sauce Gardner on the sideline and told him that he was going to call his number on the first defensive play.
The national anthem had just finished and kickoff for the Jets game against the Dolphins was moments away.
In the process, Gardner’s hit knocked Bridgewater out of the game with head and elbow injuries, leaving the Dolphins in the hands of third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson — who had never played an NFL down — for the rest of the game. This game was no one-play wonder for Gardner, either. He also made his first NFL interception, a second-quarter pick that set up a Zach Wilson touchdown and a 19-7 Jets lead at the time.
“Yeah, he’s not just ‘Ahmad’ anymore, now he’s ‘Sauce,’ ” safety Will Parks told The Post. “Sauce is on his way to being a legendary player. We see it every day in practice.’’Jets corner Sauce Gardner celebrates his interception with CJ Mosely on Oct. 9, 2022.“You ever see good, good, good?’’ Parks said. “He’s real good. Revis 5.0 in the making.’’
“I would say Sauce is a little bit more flashy than Revis was on the football field and off it. But when it comes down to lining up and being ready and being focused, he’s all that and above.’’
